What We Do

Our core activities dictate what we do on a day to day basis. However, we frequently apply for additional funding to carry out specific project work. Here is a flavour of what we work on.

What We Do

Mourne Gullion Strangford UNESCO Global Geopark brings people, nature, and heritage together. We combine everyday management with long-term projects that protect our landscapes, support communities, and create meaningful experiences for visitors.

Strategy and Planning

Our Strategy sets the Geopark’s direction. The Management Plan coordinates resources and responsibilities, while the Action Plan turns goals into clear steps and timelines. Together, they keep us focused and accountable.

Projects and Innovation

We deliver projects that bring our vision to life. The Environment Fund (2023–2028) drives sustainability and environmental action across the Geopark. Programmes such as Atlantic CultureScape, Dragons in the Hills, and ASCENT test new ideas, share knowledge, and strengthen connections with communities and partners.

Tourism and Experience

Tourism is central to how we share the Geopark. We work with partners on the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Tourism Strategy (2023–2028) and the Mourne Gullion Strangford Experience Development Plan. These ensure visitors enjoy unique experiences while protecting the landscapes and cultures that make this place special.

Celebrating Our Heritage

The Geopark tells a living story. Ancient rocks reveal Earth’s history. Traditions, language, and creativity express local culture. Archaeology and historic sites connect us to the past, while diverse habitats showcase vibrant biodiversity. Our Video Hub brings these stories to life in new ways.

Things to Do

Visitors can explore geosites, follow scenic trails, and join festivals and events across Mourne, Gullion, and Strangford. Maps and guides help plan your journey, whether you want a quiet walk, a family day out, or a deeper dive into heritage. Every visit is a chance to discover why this landscape is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark family.
