Coastal Monitoring and Adaptation Planning (CMAP) project

Overview

CMAP is a four-year, cross-border programme led by Ulster University and funded by PEACEPLUS. The project will measure how our coasts are changing and turn that evidence into practical adaptation plans for communities, nature, and infrastructure across the island of Ireland.

Why it matters here

Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark includes long, low-lying shorelines and internationally important marine habitats. Rising seas, stronger storms and shifting sediments are already reshaping our marine environment —home to seagrass meadows that lock away “blue carbon” and support biodiversity. Protecting these places means planning with the best available data.

What CMAP will do

CMAP brings together coastal monitoring, mapping and community engagement to: collect consistent data on shoreline change; assess risks to habitats, heritage and access; and produce decision-ready adaptation options for local authorities and partners.

Our role in CMAP

Within the Geopark, we’ll align CMAP evidence with on-the-ground action—especially around eco-mooring systems that reduce seabed scouring and help seagrass recover in Strangford Lough. Findings from recent advanced-mooring trials will inform how and where we replace traditional swing chains with low-impact designs.

Timeline

Project delivery runs 2025–2029, with phased monitoring, analysis, and local adaptation planning. We’ll publish updates and opportunities to get involved as milestones are reached.

Get involved

We’ll share calls for workshops, shoreline surveys and citizen-science opportunities. Boating communities can also learn more about eco-moorings and habitat-friendly anchoring in Strangford Lough.

Partners and funding

CMAP is led by Ulster University with partners across Northern Ireland and Ireland, supported by the PEACEPLUS programme managed by SEUPB. Total investment: €9.6 million (2025–2029).
