Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark at UNESCO European Geoparks Coordination Committee Meeting in Paris

The Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark team recently participated in the European Geopark Network Coordination Committee Spring Meeting in Paris. This prestigious two-day event brought together Geopark leaders from around Europe and beyond to discuss strategic developments, share expertise, and strengthen international collaboration.

The opening session provided an opportunity for engagement with Geopark representatives. The Mourne Gullion Strangford team actively contributed to discussions throughout the morning and the duration of the meeting. These interactions facilitated the exchange of ideas, best practices, and strategies to enhance Geopark initiatives on an European and international scale.

The second day focused on advancing scientific and environmental education. A key panel discussion featured highlighted innovative approaches to Geopark-based education and sustainability. The day also featured a food fair, where the Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark team showcased local produce, including Mrs C’s Home Kitchen, Neary Nogs Stoneground Chocolate, Two Stacks Irish Whiskey, and Killowen Distillery. This event provided a platform to highlight the region’s rich culinary heritage and its strong connection to the values of the Geopark network.

Before concluding the visit, the team had the privilege of meeting Irish National Delegate Agathe and the Irish Ambassador to UNESCO at UNESCO Headquarters. This meeting reaffirmed Ireland’s strong commitment to the Geoparks Network and underscored the importance of international cooperation in conserving and promoting shared geological heritage.

The Coordination Committee Meeting proved to be an invaluable experience for Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark. The team returns with renewed inspiration, strengthened partnerships, and a commitment to further advancing the Geopark’s mission. Sincere gratitude is extended to the event hosts and all Geopark colleagues for their collaboration over these two days.
