Mourne Gullion Strangford 10-year Master Plan
Mourne Gullion Strangford UNESCO Global Geopark Masterplan: Purpose Statement
Welcome to the Mourne Gullion Strangford UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp), a treasure trove of natural wonders, heritage, and diverse cultures. Within this unique landscape, organizations, communities, and individuals are united in their commitment to harness the full potential of this asset while honoring the rich heritage that defines the character of the area.
Our UGGp is envisioned as a holistic space, where stewardship, education, and sustainable development intertwine seamlessly. The Newry, Mourne, and Down District Council (NMDDC) staunchly believes in sustaining and celebrating the connections between our invaluable geological heritage and the broader spectrum of the area’s natural, cultural, and intangible heritage.
This concise document unfolds as a ten-year integrated development plan, strategically examining the potential for the sustainable growth of the Mourne, Gullion, Strangford UGGp. Aligned with our commitment to secure and retain UNESCO Global Geopark status, this plan serves as a blueprint for responsible tourism, conservation, and education. It encapsulates our Vision, Themes, Aims, and Objectives.
Outlined under four overarching themes, this document presents a synopsis of high-level strategic actions. While not exhaustive, it establishes a framework for the Mourne Gullion Strangford UNESCO Global Geopark Management Group (GMG), with NMDDC as the lead partner. Other entities that share our vision for sustainable development within the UGGp are invited to leverage this framework.
Regularly reviewed by the GMG, this document is designed to be a valuable resource for businesses and communities that align with the shared goal of enhancing Mourne Gullion Strangford UGGp.
The Masterplan and its underlying process are a collaborative effort, aiming to engage and empower communities and sectors across the UGGp catchment. Governance and implementation structures, as outlined in the Masterplan and its supporting Implementation and Business Plans (2021-2025), have been crafted to ensure ongoing community and sector input.
